What Is Marketing?

Traditionally, marketing has been described as the series of activities that lead to a transaction of goods. We have been told that we need to consider the original marketing mix of 4 P’s (product, price, place, position), and that this is the key to gaining market share and growing a business.

This idea of marketing just doesn’t stick with me. It sounds so impersonal and emotionless.

When really, marketing is all about emotion.

Marketing is about how you make people feel. It’s about spreading ideas and stories.

Marketing is about bringing people along for the journey. More than that, marketing is about becoming a part of their story.

Ultimately, you are trying to solve a problem or meet a need for the people you want to serve. If you forget about your people when you are planning your marketing strategy, then you are missing the point.
